Pioneering sustainable recycling of EV batteries

BatX Energies, founded in 2019, addresses the environmental impact of lithium-ion battery waste by pioneering a sustainable recycling system tailored to India’s needs. Recognizing a lack of recycling options in the country, the founders envisioned a circular economy approach to efficiently process end-of-life batteries, recovering valuable battery-grade metals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. BatX’s eco-friendly recycling process not only provides high-quality materials for energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure but also reduces reliance on new mineral extraction, supporting the expansion of green energy systems across diverse applications, including home energy solutions, commercial storage, and EV charging stations.

Cutting-edge high-yield zero-waste recycling technique

Early on, BatX concentrated on creating a patented recycling technology that included a hydrometallurgical process—a method of safely and effectively extracting valuable components using a water-based solution. This strategy sets BatX apart from other recycling businesses that employed less sustainable pyrometallurgical techniques by being both scalable and ecologically beneficial. By achieving a 99.95% recovery rate for essential materials, BatX's recycling technology established the groundwork for a high-yield, zero-waste recycling business.

  • Technology Readiness Level (TRL): 8
  • Battery Material Recovery

    • Primary Outputs: High-quality Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, and Manganese are reclaimed from used lithium-ion batteries, ensuring premium-grade materials suitable for various energy applications.
    • Secondary Products: The recycling process yields high-grade plastic, aluminum, copper, and stainless steel, supporting further industrial reuse and enhancing the circular economy.

  • Energy and Storage Solutions: Recycled materials are repurposed into second-life batteries that power home and commercial energy storage systems, stabilize grid demand, and reduce peak-time energy consumption.
  • Integration with EV Infrastructure: Second-life batteries provide reliable storage for EV charging stations, helping to offset grid dependency and promote renewable energy usage within EV infrastructure.

Leading the way in circularity and sustainability

BatX Energies' dedication to sustainability and circularity has helped to establish its reputation. They have lessened the need for new mining operations by concentrating on reintegrating recovered materials back into the supply chain, which helps to create batteries in a more environmentally friendly manner. By revolutionizing waste management techniques and fostering the growth of green jobs in the recycling and energy sectors, the company has emerged as a leader in India's battery recycling market. It has effectively implemented its recycling technology across multiple industries, promoting both sustainability and energy efficiency:

Off-grid energy storage solution

BATX’s recycled materials support energy storage solutions, including home energy systems, grid storage for commercial buildings, and infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations. The recycled batteries are particularly useful in off-grid or remote areas, where reliable energy storage is crucial.

Environmental and Economic Impact:

By recycling valuable metals and components from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, BATX reduces electronic waste, supports resource conservation, and mitigates the environmental impact of battery disposal. The use of second-life batteries for energy storage reduces reliance on new batteries, offering cost-effective solutions for power management and grid stabilization.

Targeted Outcomes:

BATX Energies is committed to advancing green technology in India, promoting sustainable practices in battery recycling, and supporting the infrastructure for renewable energy and electric mobility. By leveraging recycled materials, BATX helps reduce the environmental footprint of energy storage while enhancing the longevity of battery components.

Through innovative recycling processes, BATX Energies plays a pivotal role in establishing sustainable energy frameworks, bridging the gap between technological advancement and environmental responsibility.

BatX Energies is a prime illustration of how technical advancement, environmentally friendly operations, and clever alliances can have a big influence on the energy sector today. BatX is establishing itself as a major participant in the global green economy by assisting in the development of lithium-ion battery recycling in India and elsewhere with its zero-waste, zero-emission strategy.

Establishing a robust battery recycling supply chain

01.

Partnerships and Growth (2022)

BatX Energies established significant alliances with regional and foreign OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to create a consistent supply of old batteries by 2022. To establish a trustworthy and moral battery recycling supply chain, they also started initiatives to integrate neighbourhood scrap collectors into the organized sector. To properly handle the growing amounts of battery waste, BatX consequently extended its operational footprint throughout India and set up facilities with specialized recycling machinery.

02.

Success in Scaling and Funding (2023)

In December 2023, Zephyr Peacock led a $5 million pre-Series A investment round for BatX Energies, which included JITO Angel Network and other well-known investors. With the help of this finance, BatX was able to support India's shift to a low-carbon economy by growing its recycling business and breaking into new markets. The business declared that it can recycle millions of batteries a year. In October, Batx signed an agreement with MG (Morris Garage) to install a hybrid EV charger on the IIT Delhi campus with the help of DRIIV
