Wood-based filter innovation

DetoXyFi is a social enterprise incorporated under the Startup India initiative and recognized as an MSME. The organization is aligned with the mission to develop Made in India solutions that contribute to a circular economy. DetoXyFi addresses the "Har Ghar Jal" mission, which aims to provide safe drinking water to every household in India. The enterprise has developed a unique technology that converts waste wood from invasive coniferous tree species, particularly Chir Pine from Uttarakhand, into efficient drinking water filters through a human-safe chemical process. DetoXyFi's innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns by utilizing waste wood but also provides a practical solution to the global challenge of safe drinking water.

About the Technology

DetoXyFi's innovative technology revolves around transforming waste wood from invasive species into filters capable of purifying drinking water. The process, which has been researched and developed over the course of a decade, utilizes a chemical treatment that is safe for human use. This method has been validated through rigorous testing across five countries: India, the United States, Uganda, Madagascar, and Kenya, with successful trials conducted in Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka. The technology is backed by a PCT patent pending in India and the US and has received recognition in the scientific community, including a publication in Nature magazine.

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective: The filters are affordable, making them accessible to a wide population. The bag filters, bottle attachment filters, and standalone units are priced at Rs. 200, Rs. 100, and Rs. 1000 respectively, with wood filters costing Rs. 100 each.

  • Energy Efficient: These filters do not require electricity or external pressure to function, making them suitable for use in areas with limited infrastructure.

  • Versatile Applications: The filters can be used in various contexts, from individual households to disaster relief scenarios. They are also being evaluated by Indian Army units, indicating their potential for broader applications in challenging environments.

  • Proven Efficacy: The technology effectively removes contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa from water, ensuring safe drinking water. Its efficacy has been validated through laboratory and field tests and recognized by several prestigious institutions and awards.

Applications

  • Household Use: The standalone units can provide daily clean water for households without the need for electricity, making them ideal for rural or off-grid areas.

  • Disaster Relief: The agile bag filters can be deployed quickly in disaster-stricken areas to provide immediate access to clean water.

  • Military Use: The filters are being considered by the Indian Army, demonstrating their potential use in military operations where access to clean water is critical.

  • Global Reach: With successful tests conducted in multiple countries, the technology has the potential for global application, particularly in regions facing water scarcity and contamination issues.
